Album review from Rhapsody.com:
Mr. 305 is still major. MIA’s grand debauchee and bilingual maestro of all things freak-nasty seamlessly transitions from gully Carol City raps to Little Havana-tinged booty-hydraulic bangers perfect for South Beach. An infinite roster of all-star guests and world-fusion sounds get the assist: On “Go Girl,” a jangly whistler, Trina backs it up “like a Mack truck.” On “The Anthem,” a Caribbean take on Alex Guadino’s heavy-hitting “Destination Calabria,” Lil John contributes his signature interjections. Pit and Twista take on a 100m dash for “Candyman,” where specter-like sirens coo a spooky serenade. RnB sweetheart Lloyd blesses “Secret Admirer” with his mellifluous vocals. “Un Poquito,” featuring Yung Berg, is an Arabesque beast. Other bigwigs of the urban world appear — and that little chico Pit got ‘em all in the same place. - Angela Bruno
Album review from Billboard.com:
On his 2007 effort The Boatlift, Pitbull’s love of club tracks and anthemic party tunes is once again tempered by some serious material, and once again the album’s title references the early-’80s mass exodus of Cuban people from their homeland. This is the same formula that was used for his 2006 album, El Mariel, but here the measurements are off, with too much attention being paid to production and hooks while talent and personality get short shrift. Tracks like the appropriately titled “The Anthem” and “Sticky Icky,” with Lil Jon and Jim Jones, are infectious, the exciting “Midnight” features Euro-trance keyboards and singer Casely as a worthy Justin Timberlake replacement, plus there’s a handful of those Latin rap meets crunk numbers that are so identifiable as Pitbull’s. These deep Miami tracks are complemented by some street level interludes and freestyles that are rich with wit, but The Boatlift dies on the slow tracks with “Secret Admirer” being too sugary to take and “My Life” dropping embarrassing bombs like “sometimes I feel/all I can give you is sex/I’m sorry.” Get past these plaintive and uninspired tales of how heartbreaking the jet-set lifestyle is and you’re left with enough gloss and polish to consider The Boatlift a fun floor-filler, but just not up to Pitbull’s usual standards. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
Artists’ Bio from Billboard.com:
When the Southern-flavored party rap called crunk took over urban radio in 2004, Miami rapper Pitbull decided it was time to seek stardom. The way Pitbull sees it, “crunk ain’t nothin’ but bass music slowed down.” Miami bass music, that is, the kind Pitbull grew up on. His parents were first-generation Cuban immigrants who didn’t let their son forget about his culture. They required him to memorize the works of Cuban poet José MartÃ, and Pitbull understood the power of words right away. Southern acts like Poison Clan and Luther Campbell were early influences, but as he grew, the young rapper got turned on to the G-funk sound of the West Coast and the New York City point of view Nas brought to the game. Pitbull got involved in the game himself when he started appearing on Miami mixtapes. A meeting with Irv Gotti resulted in nothing, but soon Luther Campbell called on the rapper to appear on his “Lollipop” single. It brought Pitbull to the attention of the Diaz Brothers management team, who introduced the rapper to the king of crunk, Lil Jon. A Pitbull freestyle landed on Lil Jon’s platinum-selling Kings of Crunk album in 2002, and the rapper’s “Oye” track appeared on the 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack in 2003. Ready to take it all the way to the top, Pitbull unleashed his debut full-length, M.I.A.M.I., in 2004 on the TVT label with the Lil Jon-produced single “Culo” leading the way. Soon Pitbull was making guest appearances on tracks by everyone from the Ying Yang Twins to Elephant Man. The 2005 compilation Money Is Still a Major Issue collected the best of these collaborations along with some remixes and unreleased tracks. In 2006 the single “Bojangles” prepared fans for his next album, El Mariel. As the album landed on the shelves it was announced that his next effort would be entirely in Spanish and titled The Boatlift. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
