The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath
February 8, 2008
NEW IN MUSIC: The Mars Volta new album The Bedlam In Goliath is the Hot Shot Debut on the Billboard 200 this week, coming in at #3 over some strong contenders.
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
January 29, 2008
Vampire Weekend delivered their self-titled debut album today. This NY four-piece draw on their diverse backgrounds and interests, experimenting with African guitar music, the Western classical canon, hazy memories of Cape Cod summers, winters in upper Manhattan, and reggaeton. “Equal parts shruggy New York indie strumming and groovy Afro-pop, Vampire Weekend’s organ-and-drum runs highlight narratives about relationships, punctuation, and sometimes both” - Spin. Named “Hot New Kids” in Rolling Stone’s “Hot” issue.
Cat Power - Jukebox
January 22, 2008
Cat Power’s new album Jukebox is her second album of covers. This one a tribute to the great vocalists who’ve influenced her over the years. Backed by Dirty Delta Blues (Judah Bauer, Gregg Foreman, Jim White, Erik Papparazzi). Guest appearances: Spooner Oldham (Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan), Larry McDonald (Toots & The Maytals, Taj Mahal), Teenie Hodges (Al Green, Memphis Rhythm Band), and Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Will Oldham).
The Magnetic Fields - Distortion
January 15, 2008
“Three-Way,” the opening song on Distortion, introduces, in a deceptively exuberant blast of pop noise, the themes and obsessions of Magnetic Fields’ eighth album. The lyrics simply consist of gleefully repeated exclamations, by male and female voices, of the song title. While “Three-Way” may summon images of Twister-like physical exertions in a situation where three is not a crowd, the subsequent material describes scenarios in which desire itself is twisted into dark, alluring shapes and love remains tantalizingly unrequited. Using a modest number of instruments, composer and producer Stephin Merritt creates a veritable wall of sound. He employs no synthesizers; instead, he generates waves of feedback that envelop every track like a spiky black gift-wrapping.
Hot Hot Heat - Happiness LTD. (EP)
January 4, 2008
Hot Hot Heat released a new EP titled “Happiness LTD.”, also the name of their most recent album, on the 1st of the year. It includes three new tracks, an acoustic version of “My Best Friend”, and an acoustic version of “Give Up?”.
Eisley - Like The Actors (EP)
January 4, 2008
Eisley recently released an EP called “Like The Actors”. It contains two live tracks and three studio recordings not found on their other two full length albums. I believe this collection is only available for digital download.
Stars - In Our Bedroom After The War
December 2, 2007
Sophisticated Baroque pop ballads fill this amazing disc from Stars, a Canadian indie rock outfit who released their fourth album titled “In Our Bedroom After The War” in September. Perhaps most enticing of all, Stars uses the vocals of both frontman Torquil Campbell and female lead Amy Millan to create engrossing duets. Be sure not to miss the last song on the CD!
Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots
November 8, 2007
Although not a new band on the scene, Shiny Toy Guns has a sound all to their own. Part electronica, part power-pop, part new wave, and all bright and shiny (as their name apply implies), Shiny Toy Guns’ debut release “We Are Pilots” is an album you’ll want to play over and over again. Do you like it or are you just happy it likes you? Tough to say. Take the fasttrack by listening to track 2, “Le Disko”, first. Just when you think you’ve had enough of the song, a little surprise awaits!
Angels & Airwaves - I-Empire
November 6, 2007
Angels & Airwaves (or AVA, as they’re also known) is lead by bassist/singer Tom Delonge, the former frontman of Blink-182. “I-Empire” is the band’s second album, and is being lead with the energetic single “Everything’s Magic”. The album plays out in a youthful style, with each song having its own sense of hope and wonder. The music is spirited guiter with overlays of techno crackle and pop, and the anthem-like aspect of the sound keeps you wanting to hear more. All in all, I really enjoyed the listen - it felt like a call to arms for emo fans, as the first song on the CD suggests. Listen and enjoy!
Coheed And Cambria - Feathers (Single)
October 23, 2007
Coheed And Cambria’s released a new album today entitled “No World For Tomorrow”. The track I’ve chosen, “Feathers”, is a solid emo song filled with anger, emotion, and guitar-licked heartbreak. A definite download.
Sarah White - White Light
October 22, 2007
“Classic, raggedly beautiful, made lovely by its flaws; it’s a voice that sounds like it was made to tell stories, and it’s the most important instrument in every song she does.” - EPITONIC
That says it better than I could. Check out the whole album if you like the song I selected.
